I am a 41 year old nurse and mom to 4 teenagers. I have always put my family first, keeping my kids busy in activities and not looking after myself.
When I was 38, I was having a great deal of pain and difficulty with my knees. As a nurse on a busy unit, this was becoming a big problem for me. My doctor told me that I had arthritis in my knees, neck, and shoulders, and that I was too young to be considered for surgery. My only real option was to lose weight.
On January 1 of 2009, I joined a gym. Of course I told them I didn’t need a trainer, I had lost weight before on my own, I was fine (except I had gained it all back).
In my first month on my own, I managed to lose only one pound. After that I decided that maybe I did need some help and scheduled an assessment. The news was devastating. I was 220+ lbs, and I was 46.6% body fat. After a very good cry, I was lucky enough to be paired up with Lyndsey.
My first couple of workouts were very hard, I really thought it would just be easier to stay fat, but I am not a quitter. I persisted and did everything Lyndsey told me to do.
I kept a food journal that we would review every week. Every couple of weeks or so, Lyndsey would make a suggested change to my diet. Changing eating habits weren’t horrible or difficult, because we did it slowly over time.
I worked out hard 4-6 times a week, and when my arthritis would flare up, Lyndsey knew just how to modify my program so I could keep working out.
It didn’t take long for results to start happening and they really haven’t stopped. I’ve become very strong, physically and mentally. I can do things now that I never would have thought possible.
When I was heavy, I never went shopping for clothes. I would walk into a store, look at the displays and leave because I knew nothing was going to fit. It was terribly embarrassing to go to the jean store and barely fit into their largest pair. Now I can go to regular stores and shop with my daughters. It is so much more fun.
I have made a lot of lifestyle changes over the past 2 years.
My arthritis has not progressed at all since I began working with Lyndsey. I feel great most of the time, and when I am having flare ups, I just work out anyway, as it usually makes me feel better.
I eat healthy most of the time, so when special events are happening I can choose to eat what is being served. But nowadays I don’t enjoy eating the things I used to.
My lifestyle changes have positively impacted my family too. I am much more conscientious of what I pack in school lunches, and what I make for dinner and snacks. Even our traditional holiday dinners have changed.
Currently, I still work out 4-6 days a week, and I still work with Lyndsey. The gym is one of my favorite places to be. I always look forward to my workouts.
I bring my family to the gym.
When I have to travel, I look for places to work out instead of places to eat, since I usually bring my own food.
My kids are still very busy, but I have made myself a priority and I make sure that their schedules fit into mine.
My weight currently fluctuates between 151-155 lb and my percentage of body fat is 18.6%.
When I see pictures of myself, I can’t believe the changes. Sometimes, it is like I am looking at someone else. I get a great deal of compliments on my success, and many, many questions on how I did it.
The best advice I can give is to get a good trainer and follow their directives. Lyndsey knows what I need and I know that I can trust whatever she is telling me to do. My success has been completely dependent on the knowledge and expertise of my trainer. I would not be where I am today without her.
Don’t ever tell yourself that you don’t have time. If it is important enough, you will find time.
Thank you Lyndsey!! I could never have made this journey without you!!
